Shrouded in layers of concrete that mimic sedimentation strata of the earth, Belle Strata is a unique rental experience. It is set on a quiet private road in Martin’s River, Nova Scotia. The private 3-bedroom bungalow faces a forest of mixed hard- and softwood trees, part of a property that also is home to the owners.
The property is loved but not managed. Native plants are left to grow and are seldom encouraged to leave, allowing for a wide variety of pollinators and insects to thrive. This provides home to a wide variety of birds and small mammals like squirrels and chipmunks.
dedication to sustainability
The dedication began with the vision that a too-large home could be separated into two smaller ones without a lot of new building. Thus began the process of removing a bungalow from its 2-storey partner and ferrying it across the property to its current location (visit the Gallery) onto a new foundation. Using foam and concrete to shroud the bungalow has drastically increased its R-factor and its longevity in the face of storms.
The bungalow dates back to the 1970’s when it was a single family home. It has been updated saving what was still usable while also re-using/re-purposing where possible. Belle Strata has mostly been furnished with carefully selected gently used items, adding to its overall sustainability. We hope you will find as much beauty in the mismatched dinnerware as you do in the exterior architecture.
